I can imagine applications for such cameras where maximum definition is needed, or when the sensor needs to be optimized for some special kind of light, such as infrared, for example. Applications for such a camera might include energy management, forensics, graphics, espionage, security, and some military applications. I can imagine that such a camera with a strong orange filter might have some high contrast capability that would cut through atmospheric haze and render more contrasty monochrome images of distant objects. This is what is done with military class binoculars, for example.
To me, it was fascinating to see how much improved the camera did in its B&W role with the "stuff" removed from the face of the camera's "color" sensor.
